About Podcasts

Not sure what a podcast is? No problem. Here, we'll make you an expert on podcasts in no time.

What's A Podcast?

In web speak, a podcast is an RSS based method for syndicating audio (and now video) content. In more layman's terms, a podcast is a way of posting new audio or video, and letting people know when that new stuff is posted.

How It Works

Podcasting works in a way similar to a magazine or a newspaper. Just like you subscribe to a newspaper you have to subscribe to a podcast.

Unlike a magazine subscription however, podcasting doesn't require you to "sign up" by sending anyone any information. To subscribe to a podcast you simply download a file from an Internet address that tells an audio program, like iTunes, to start watching a "feed" located at a particular address. Your audio program, once it had determined that there is new content to download, will either tell you that new content is available for download, or it will simply download the content automatically.

So, What Does All This Mean?

In short, podcasts give us an automated way of sending you audio, and they give you a way to automatically download that audio. Through podcasts, we can tell your computer that we have added new sermons or lectures, and you can download those sermons or lectures to your computer. Once downloaded, you can listen to the audio files on your computer, delete them (if you wish), burn them to CD's, or upload them to your favorite digital music player such as an Apple iPod or Microsoft Zune.
